About CLIX

ABOUT CLIX

CLIX is a digital portal that connects pro bono lawyers with community impact organisations (and their clients) who need legal support. Developed by Justice Connect, CLIX is brought to Hong Kong by PILnet & Equal Justice.

WHY WE STARTED

Many community impact organisations struggle to find lawyers willing to help them for free.

Lawyers want to help but struggle to find suitable pro bono opportunities.

VISION

A happier Hong Kong where everyone has access to the legal information and support they need, and where Hong Kong lawyers can readily access pro bono opportunities to use their skills and knowledge to do good.

MISSION

A digital legal services brokerage solution for underserved people, and the community impact organisations that help them. CLIX is on a mission to strengthen Hong Kong’s pro bono ecosystem to ensure that disadvantaged people can access legal information and support.

What type of help is provided?

Organisation support

This can include any legal need faced by the organisation, for example setting up a legal entity, preparing articles of association, drafting policies and board terms of reference, preparing employment handbooks and contracts, reviewing website terms and policies, conducting a governance audit and investigations.

Client beneficiary support

CLIX helps the individual clients of community impact organisations to solve their legal problems. We provide disadvantaged people with legal access and support to tackle legal problems like employment, family law, crime, housing and immigration.

Other support

CLIX can provide other support, including preparing legal updates and briefing notes, delivering legal training for staff and clients, undertaking background research for public policy consultations and conducting comparative legal research.

.

How does CLIX work?

  • 1. Submit request

Community impact organisation submits a request for legal support for itself or a client

  • 2. Review

Requests are reviewed by PILnet or Equal Justice before being posted on the Portal.

  • 3. Express interest

Lawyers receive notifications of opportunities and can express their interest

  • 4. Conflict check

Law firm performs internal conflict check to see if they can accept the legal request

  • 5. Match

If there are no conflicts or objections, a match is made

  • 6. Resolve request

The lawyer/law firm works with the impact organisation or client directly, outside CLIX

Benefits of CLIX

Society

Hong Kong’s community legal access and pro bono ecosystems are significantly enhanced.

Hong Kong advances the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 16 ‘equal access to justice for all’, as well as all the other goals, depending on the mission and focus of the impact organisation being helped.

Crucial data is generated that can be shared within the community, offering key insights into legal access needs and solutions.

Community Impact Organisations

Community impact organisations can access legal support quickly and easily by advertising pro bono opportunities on CLIX in real time, to a wide range of legal service providers.

Technical upkeep, so often a deterrent to understaffed and underfunded organisations, will be handled by the CLIX Team.

No longer needing to find, develop and maintain their own legal support network, the organisation saves time and money, allowing them to focus on providing critical services.

Client beneficiaries

Disadvantaged and vulnerable people receive the legal information and support they need and are empowered to understand, manage and solve their legal problems.

Lawyers

Lawyers enjoy a more efficient and consistent experience when looking to use their professional skills to do good.

With access to a wide variety of potential pro bono opportunities, clients, organisations and social issues, they will save time finding opportunities to use their skills and knowledge to help the community.

More lawyers will be encouraged to support the community and, those who need to, can find opportunities to complete their required pro bono hours.

Testimonials & Case Stories

  • Supporting a noodle shop owner with personal injury claims

The owner of a small noodle shop was being sued by a former worker for employees' compensation and personal injuries. After the end of the contract, the former employee claimed that she had an accident whilst working in the shop and threatened to sue for compensation. The medical certificates submitted contained inconsistencies casting doubt on whether the alleged injury was caused in the owner shop. Equal Justice assisted the shop owner and within several months, the worker withdrew the claims voluntarily, putting an end to the shop owner legal problem.
